Footsteps came down the hallway.
Then Lily’s voice replied quietly:
“Yes… she left for work.”
My heart shattered.
But what I heard next made my blood run cold.
A man’s voice answered.
“Good. We don’t have much time.”
The bedroom door slowly opened.
I could see two pairs of shoes through the gap under the bed.
Lily sat down on the mattress above me.
The man started whispering instructions.
“Did you bring the money?”
Lily hesitated.
Then she said something that made my entire body freeze.
“I told you… my mom keeps the cash in her office drawer.”
For a moment I couldn’t move.
My own daughter…
was planning to steal from me.
But then the man said something even worse.
“After today, we’re leaving town. Your mom will never find you.”
That’s when I realized something terrifying.
My daughter wasn’t just skipping school.
She was planning to disappear.
