Part 2 Clara walked away without answering, because no mother should ever have to explain cruelty to a child.

Clara walked away without answering, because no mother should ever have to explain cruelty to a child.

That night, she sat with Lily on the steps of a destroyed church, holding her close while the cold wind moved through the broken city. Lily fell asleep in her arms, but sometime before morning, Clara realized her daughter’s body was burning with fever.

By sunrise, volunteers found them and rushed Lily to an emergency medical tent.

For two days, Clara did not leave her side.

She prayed, cried, and begged God not to take the only person she had left.

On the third morning, Lily opened her eyes.

Her first words were soft, weak, and devastating:

“Did grandma still not want me?”

Clara turned away and cried so hard she could barely stand.

Weeks later, when the city finally began to recover, Clara’s mother came to find them.

This time she was the one crying.

This time she was the one begging at the door of a shelter.

But when she reached out to Lily, the little girl stepped back and asked one question that shattered her completely:

“If I died that night… would you have loved me then?”
