Elena walked back into the ruined street with her daughter still in her arms. That night, they slept beside a broken wall, under a piece of torn plastic, while Sofia burned with fever and called for water in her sleep.
By morning, a rescue team found them and rushed the little girl to an emergency shelter.
For three days, Elena sat beside her daughter, praying she would survive.
When Sofia finally opened her eyes, she looked at her mother and whispered:
“Did grandma let us in now?”
Elena broke down in silence.
Weeks later, when the city began to recover, Elena’s mother came searching for them.
She stood in front of the shelter, crying, begging to see her granddaughter.
But when Sofia saw her, she hid behind Elena and asked one question that made the old woman collapse in tears:
“Are you here because you love me now… or because I didn’t die?”
