🎬 PART 2: «The Day She Lost Everything»

He ended the call and slipped the phone back into his pocket.

Then, without saying a word, he bent down in front of his daughter.

His hands were gentle as he took the wet sponge from her fingers.

She let go of it slowly, still staring at him in disbelief.

He dropped the sponge back into the blue bucket.

The sound was small.

But in the silence of that foyer, it felt final.

The woman stepped forward, anger and panic fighting on her face. “You can’t be serious.”

He rose to his full height and turned to her.

“This house is no longer yours,” he said.

The glass in her hand shook. “What?”

His jaw tightened. “You made my daughter kneel on the floor and scrub marble like a servant.”

“She needed discipline,” the woman snapped, but her voice was breaking now.

He looked at her with quiet disgust. “No. She needed protection.”

The little girl was still on her knees, staring up at him with wide, wet eyes.

He turned back to her, then crouched again and held out his hand.

“Stand up,” he said softly.

Her lip trembled. “Am I in trouble?”

His whole face broke for the first time.

“No, sweetheart,” he whispered. “You never were.”

She put her tiny hand in his, and he helped her to her feet.

The woman’s breathing grew faster. “You’re really doing this? Over this?”

He looked at her one last time.

“Not over this,” he said. “Because of this.”

Then he took his daughter into his arms.

She clung to him so hard it was like she had been waiting all day to believe someone had finally seen what was happening.

And as the woman stood there going pale, the little girl buried her face in his shoulder and began to cry for real.
