🎬 PART 2: «The Hero Lying in the Grass»

The father heard the spark before anyone moved.

His training took over.

“Back!”

He grabbed his son with one arm and pulled the dog close with the other, dragging them away from the burning fuse as officers rushed forward.

The boy screamed, “Don’t leave Buddy!”

“I won’t,” his father said, voice breaking. “I won’t.”

A sharp pop burst from the scorched grass, small but close enough to send everyone stumbling back.

The officer stared at the place where the boy had been standing seconds earlier.

His face collapsed.

“He pushed him away from it.”

The dog lifted his head weakly at the sound of the boy crying.

The child crawled toward him and wrapped both arms around his neck.

“Buddy, I’m sorry,” he sobbed. “I thought you were playing.”

The father looked at the officer, his eyes wet with rage and fear.

“He wasn’t attacking.”

The officer couldn’t speak.

The neighbors who had screamed now stood frozen, ashamed.

The father gently checked the dog’s ear, then let out a shaking breath.

“It’s just a graze.”

The boy looked up through tears.

“He’s okay?”

The dog licked the child’s cheek.

The father broke into a sob and pulled them both close.

“He’s okay,” he whispered. “Because he loved you more than he feared us.”

The officer stepped closer, voice trembling.

“I’m sorry.”

The father looked down at the dog still shielding the boy with his body.

“Say it to him.”

The officer knelt in the grass.

“I’m sorry, boy.”

Buddy only rested his head on the child’s lap.

Because heroes don’t ask to be understood.

They just run toward danger before anyone else sees it.
