Part 2: No one moved.

The rich woman turned sharply toward the old man. “Don’t listen to them,” she said too quickly. “She planned this. She came here for money.”

But the mother finally broke.

“No,” she sobbed. “I came because he’s sick… and because his mother is dead.”

The hallway seemed to tilt.

The old man stared at her. “What did you say?”

The mother held the boy tighter and cried, “Your daughter is dead. She died three days ago. She told me if this child ever got worse… I had to bring him here. To his real family.”

A gasp spread through the corridor.

The rich woman stepped back.

The old man’s knees nearly gave out. “My daughter?” he whispered. “No… no, she died years ago.”

The mother slowly shook her head.

“No. She didn’t die. She was taken away from you.”

Now every phone was pointed at them.

The rich woman’s face changed. The anger was gone.

Only fear remained.

The little boy looked at the old man and whispered through tears, “Mommy said Grandpa never stopped looking for us…”

The old man began to shake.

He turned slowly toward the elegant woman beside him.

And in that moment, everyone understood.

She had not been protecting the family.

She had been hiding the truth from it.
