The Music Box
Part 1 — The Melody of Memories
On the same bench, the elderly woman admired the diamond ring on her finger while humming softly.
A little girl approached, holding a small, old music box.
“My mom had this,” the girl said. “She said it belonged to someone very important.”
The elderly woman’s breath caught. “Impossible… where did you get that?”
“My mom kept it for you,” the girl replied. “She said one day you would need to hear it again.”
The man behind them shifted uncomfortably.
The girl wound the music box. A haunting, familiar tune played.
The elderly woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“That melody… I haven’t heard it in thirty years,” she whispered.
The girl’s voice shook: “She said you promised to return it… but never did.”
The woman’s hand went to her mouth. “Who… who was your mother?”
The girl paused. “She said you were supposed to protect her… but instead, you walked away.”
The elderly woman’s ring slipped slightly. She staggered backward.
The girl opened the music box fully.
Inside was a tiny note, faded and torn.
The woman leaned forward, heart pounding. “What… what does it say?”
The girl read it softly: “I forgive you… if you find me.”
The wind picked up. The elderly woman’s face drained of color.
“I… I need to…” she whispered. “I need to find her…”

Part 2 — The Last Song
The elderly woman clutched the music box to her chest.
“I thought she was gone forever,” she whispered. “I never imagined—”
“She waited,” the girl interrupted softly. “She waited every day… hoping you would come back.”
The man behind them shifted nervously, realizing he had witnessed something he shouldn’t.
“She said… you never knew how much it hurt,” the girl continued. “She said she wanted to see if you remembered her.”
The elderly woman sank to her knees, sobbing openly. “I remember… I remember everything. And I failed her.”
The little girl knelt beside her, eyes glistening. “She said… it’s okay now.”
The music box played its final notes.
The elderly woman hugged the girl tightly. “I will never leave you again.”
The little girl whispered, “Then the song can finally end.”
