He rushed to his wife, dropped to his knees beside her, and gently touched her shaking face.
She couldn’t hold back the tears anymore.
“I wanted today to be perfect,” she whispered.
“I was going to tell you you’re going to be a father.”
One of the maids started crying.
Then another maid spoke through tears:
“She baked the cake herself, sir. Your mother saw the message… and threw it on the floor.”
The room went completely silent.
His wife lowered her eyes in humiliation, but he carefully picked up the tiny baby box, opened it, and saw the little shoes inside.
His whole face broke.
Then he slowly stood up and turned toward his mother.
She remained cold for a second before saying,
“A woman in this house should learn respect.”
He stared at her with horror and heartbreak.
Then, in a voice so calm it terrified everyone, he said:
“No. A mother should know the difference between discipline… and cruelty.”
His mother’s expression changed.
And then he delivered the one line no one expected:
“You won’t be here when our child is born.”
