The groom stepped forward slowly.
“Your son?”
The bride grabbed his arm.
“Don’t listen to her. She’s confused.”
The elderly woman looked at him through tears.
“No, Daniel.”
The groom froze.
Only one person called him that with that voice.
His mother.
The woman he had been told was too sick to travel.
The woman his bride said had refused to come.
His face went pale.
“Mom?”
The ballroom went silent.
The bride’s hand slipped from his arm.
The elderly woman’s lips trembled.
“I came early. She found me near the kitchen. She said if I entered the hall, everyone would laugh at you for having a weak mother.”
Daniel turned toward the bride.
“What?”
The bride shook her head quickly.
“She was making a scene.”
His mother looked down at the frosting on her cardigan.
“She pushed me near the cake. When it fell, she told everyone I ruined it.”
One of the officers stood.
“Sir, your mother’s medical alert team received the panic signal. She has private protection because of the family estate.”
The bride’s face lost all color.
Daniel looked at her like she had become a stranger in white lace.
“You knew who she was.”
The bride whispered, “I was protecting our image.”
“Our image?” His voice broke. “You humiliated my mother.”
The elderly woman reached for him.
“I didn’t press the button because of the cake,” she whispered. “I pressed it because I finally understood she was going to separate you from me after today.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
The bride tried to step closer.
“Please. This is our wedding.”
He looked at the cake on the floor, then at his mother’s shaking hands.
“No,” he said quietly. “This was a test.”
The bride’s lips parted.
“And you failed before the vows.”
Daniel knelt beside his mother, took off his tuxedo jacket, and wrapped it around her shoulders.
“I’m sorry I didn’t see it sooner.”
His mother touched his face.
“You see it now.”
Then Daniel stood, looked at the guests, and said, “There will be no wedding today.”
The bride broke into tears, but nobody moved toward her.
Because the woman she treated like a helpless old guest had just revealed the truth under every chandelier in the room.
