Arthur stared at the bracelet until the letters blurred.
His daughter grabbed the envelope. “This is impossible.”
But Arthur knew the handwriting.
Clara had been the only woman who never cared about his fortune.
Years ago, his family had told him she left him for another man.
They never told him she was expecting a child.
The nurse stood still, afraid to breathe.
“I didn’t come for money,” she said. “I came because I wanted to know if I was unwanted.”
Arthur’s face broke.
“No,” he whispered. “Never.”
His daughter looked away, ashamed now, because she understood what her family had hidden.
Arthur reached for the nurse’s hand.
“I lost Clara,” he said. “But I will not lose you too.”
For the first time in her life, the nurse heard the words she had needed since childhood:
“You were loved before you were born.”
