PART 2: “The Sister He Was Told Never Existed”

The businessman stepped back like the marble floor had moved beneath him.

“My mother only had one child,” he said.

The cleaner shook her head, tears forming.

“That’s what they told you.”

His wife reached for his arm. “This is not the place.”

But he pulled away.

The birthday card had a message inside:

To my first daughter. One day your brother will know you were loved.

The cleaner had spent her whole life believing she was unwanted.

He had spent his whole life believing he was alone.

Both of them had been lied to.

The businessman looked at the cleaner’s face now, really looked.

The same eyes.

The same small scar near the eyebrow.

The same blue bird that had followed both of them through different lives.

He whispered, “What’s your name?”

She answered.

And for the first time, he heard the name his family had erased.
