But her eyes never left the widow.
“You remember my mother,” she said quietly.
The widow shook her head immediately.
“I have no idea who you are.”
The girl slowly reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Yellowed.
She held it up so everyone could see.
“My mother kept every letter he sent her.”
Whispers spread through the crowd.
The widow’s breathing became faster.
The girl opened the envelope and pulled out a photograph.
It showed the dead man… standing beside a much younger woman.
Holding a baby.
The date written on the back made several guests gasp.
Because it was taken two years before his wedding.
The widow’s hands started shaking.
“That’s fake,” she said.
But the girl stepped closer to the coffin and placed the photo on top of it.
“I didn’t come here for money,” she said calmly.
“I came because my mother died last month.”
The crowd went silent again.
Then the girl added one final sentence that made several members of the dead man’s family look at each other nervously:
“She told me something before she died.”
Something about how your husband really made his fortune…
